So who is Marven Southgate?

Marven Southgate is a 25 year old heavyweight hip hop and Afro/Drill musician, producer, brother and a voice for young, motivated, positive beings built to inspire the world.

Talk to us about the name Marven Southgate?

Well “Marven” is my real name, named after the legendary Marvin Gaye.

Spelling difference was a legendary error that my old man pulled when he did my birth certificate registrations haha…. and I’ll always respect him for that, a big shout out to him.

Southgate is an urban real term for “Suiderhof” my neighbourhood. That’s where I re-connected with my childhood friends who I first started recording records with, long story short, we all connected our real names to it and made it a movement/brand.

When did it all start?

unnamed-3

I started rapping at the age of 11 with a classmate of mine by the name of Collins during school breaks at Noordgrens in Rundu, we were in grade 5 at the time.

When did you decide that this was what you wanted to do?

Last year 2015

What was your first break?

My first real break was back in 2012 when I dropped my first solo record “Problem” with Infinity Records.

unnamed-6

How has it been since?

I’ve been blessed to have fans that have always believed in me from the day I released my first record, so they’ve always been close to my music. That has given me the chance to keep polishing and revamping my skill as a musician and the time to build myself as a person.

So what genre does your music fall under?

Hip Hop and Afro-drill

What would you want people to get from your music?

Inspiration, self believe, positivity and consciousness of protecting dreams, dreams are vulnerable until you make them a reality.

What do you feel about the music industry in Namibia?

The recipe is ready, all the right cooks just need to come together and connect to cook up a storm in “kitchen 2016, 17 and forward”.

What do you appreciate and what would you take away?

I appreciate the beauty in the struggle cause if we can make it in Nam, we can make it anywhere. I know it may come off a little corny using that statement but my country loves super-ripe things.. “nice things” , Namibians love their music super good. So when we deliver super work to our country it’s a double nod to the world. What I would take away is the struggle of getting the work to the destined platforms. Musicians, radio Dj’s, presenters, and the media need to build fresh grounds to help grow the Wrath of the our industry, the completion shouldn’t be here no more, let’s show Africa and the rest of the world the power such a beautiful, clean country possess. I’d also like to urge NBC to encourage the youth to set up platforms in the beautiful empty studio rooms for new Tv shows that appeal to the youth to keep them home on Fridays,. It is possible. The youth should also approach NBC with good initiatives. NBC is ready to work with us let’s just show them we are fit to lead the country in the next decade.

unnamed-9

Who do you look up to as an artist?

Nas

Whose craft do you admire most among Namibian artists?

Papa Francois, Gazza, Lioness, Sunny Boy, Samuelle, Jackson Kaujeua, Esmeralda GB, Just Robert, J-Black, Johnnie Lenoir, Big Ben, Kwxme Sankxrra, Handel Mahela, Lady May, Dice, Phura, R.U.K and Lesean Elshadai, they are so many…

Talk to us about albums?

We’ve released mixtapes, with Unknown Division as a trio, Just Robert, Johnnie Lenoir and I. Another mixtape as Alkebulan connection that’s a movement with the musicians I just mentioned in addition with Lesean Elshadai. But as a solo artist the project I’m busy working on is the first baby from me “Marven Southgate”. It’s gonna be so dope, I assure Namibia is gonna take pride in this..so I need the whole country onboard waving the flag.

Om te se?

Om Te Se is my first offering from the full body of art I’m painting. Video is out on my YouTube channel. The record was produced by Static Play, recorded by Just Robert, written by Marven Southgate. The visuals were shot By Riz Zimmerman from DBR and directed by Riz and I. The record is about my decision to make my music a priority. I talk about how my mom feels about my journey to set a good future for myself, her and the rest of my family. It also gives a picture of how long it took me to beat the battle of whether to have a 8 to 5 or use the secret weapon GOD gave me in order to help take care of my family and the less fortunate.

unnamed

The bridge after the two verses is an old famous Rukavango song which means a “Lazy man gets pounded”

So I chose to put my heart and art into this music thing to make it work, I refuse to be that lazy man.

I’m from Rundu by the way repping Ru-Town shout out to my home town and much love to my country.

Who like in ever would you like to work with?

Hishishi Papa, Lioness, Esmeralda GB, Big Ben, Rosevida, Sally, Handel Mahela, Nates, Skrypt and Female Donkey.

What are you listening to right now?

Good music

What should we look forward to?

A special package from me to my fans who see the wave already.

Marven Southgate | Om Te Se lyrics:

Verse1

Man im stuck in the middle of/

situations in ma corridor/

sitting patient I need more and more/

to tell em bi**h I made it our a foreighn door/

it ain’t great if you ain’t all in for it/

pitty haters sh*t is really corny/

if they need favours we could get it for them/

f*ck the building we’re the biggest story/

Can’t see the picture need a steady shot/

I know ma temperature very hot/

I know writers block your favourite block/

but you won’t block us man it takes a lot/

Patience when you try invading us/

I see many men not man enough/

Too many duplicates adding up/

But there’s only one I (EYE) like Fetty Wap/

Man it don’t really take a lot, it just takes a lota prayer/

Stunner throw the money in the sky and tell em n*ggas pay up/

All this n*ggas runner ups don’t bring em round the cup we’re major/

I just really think its funny how we passed em like some majors/

when we do it!!!!!

Pre-hook

You know I put my heart in to it/ (you know I put my heart in to it)

You know I put my art in to it/(you know I put my art in to it )

Don’t get it twisted like a doobie/(don’t get it twisted like a doobie)

Chorus:

Man you can’t do it like I do it/

I like it rare//

My family is the crew/

we’re the business we’re the pair/

It ain’t nothing new/

man we never played it fair/

Put my heart into it sh*t got massive with a prayer/

get it clear/ (IS OM TE SE)

Man is man, gita maak n plan/ (IS OM TE SE)

Kapandi is los, alles is op n pos/ (IS OM TE SE)

Jy wil nie, jy los, sh*t is mine not yours/ (IS OM TE SE)

You ain’t rocking with my aura tell these n*ggas adios

Pre-hook

You know I put my heart in to it/ (you know I put my heart in to it)

You know I put my art in to it/(

Don’t get it twisted like a doobie/

Verse 2

AHHHHHHHHH the Zali called me the other day she like son you know that you’re growing up/

Told her got a plan she ain’t gotta worry that’s the plan and she know wassup/

Cause i’ve been a king and she been a queen and we’re the team with the golden cups/

And I’ve seen the dungen sh*t is ugly what it comes with cold as f*ck/

At the top gotta stay winning/

Dreams never pop when you’re day dreaming/

Dreams only pop when you stay chasing/

So we never stop like racism/

Got the game on lock and we’re paving it/

For the team for the mob and the days we’ve been/

Putting in that work we were never linient/

Now we’re the cream of the crop n*ggas can’t believe it/

Now watch them treat me like Bushiri/

Is he really doing this shit foreally/

boi I’ve been a problem,boi I’ve been trilly/

Started from the bottom to the top of the building/

Real sh*t (Real sh*t)

Started from the bottom to the top of the building/

Real sh*t (Real sh*t)

Started from the bottom to the top of the building/

Kill sh*t

Bridge:

Egara lyo wudweeeee kuli twa…….

Egara lyo wudweeeee kuli twa kuli kwechenga..

Egara lyo wudweeeee kuli twa…….

Egara lyo wudweeeee kuli twa kuli kwechenga..

Chorus:

Man you can’t do it like I do it/

I like it rare//

My family is the crew/

we’re the business we’re the pair/

It ain’t nothing new/

man we never played it fair/

Put my heart into it sh*t got massive with a prayer/

get it clear/ (IS OM TE SE)

Man is man, gita maak n plan/ (IS OM TE SE)

Kapandi is los, alles is op n pos/ (IS OM TE SE)

Jy wil nie, jy los, sh*t is mine not yours/ (IS OM TE SE)
