We are currently raving about Hilifa’s latest single titled “Fikama” featuring the great KBoz. But check out his other work too, he sure is one to look out for.
We caught up with Hilifa to find out what he’s been up to as well as what we can look forward to this year.
So who is Hilifa?
Hilifa94 is an artist/award nominated entertainer from Ongwediva
When did it all start?
It all started in High School when I started rapping with my 2 friends in a group called Renegades. The rest is History.
When did you decide that this was what you wanted to do?
Last year 2015. Before that I was doing it only as a hobby and I was planning on going to school, studying and getting a job like “normal” people, but I realized that life is worth living and I’d rather do what I love.
What was your first break?
When my debut single made it to number 1 on the Energy 100fm Hip Hop/R&B countdown. It managed to remain number 1 for 3 weeks in a row and that was in 2014. I never looked back ever since.
How has it been since?
It’s been great because things have been looking up. My name has become a household name around industry circles and things are just looking bright. If I could give it 1 word it would be “JIGGY”.
What would you want people to get from your music?
I want them to experience the freedom of just being themselves and not try to fit in with society says is acceptable.
What do you feel about the music industry in Namibia?
The industry is growing but we don’t have enough mediums to show our talents and express ourselves through our music.
What do you appreciate and what would you take away?
I appreciate the fact that we are artistic and we promote culture through our music.
I would take away the politics associated with the music and how it’s controlled by those with the power to influence it.
Who do you look up to as an artist?
Kanye West. He has proved that art really is an expression of oneself.
Whose craft do you admire most among Namibian artists?
Talk to us about albums? Singles out at the moment?
I have no albums out yet. However, I’ve put out one EP and two mixtapes over the past two years. I’ll be releasing a jam compilation which will be a deluxe edition of my “Most Wanted” mixtape. My most recent single is titled FIKAMA featuring Dj KBoz.
Who like in ever would you like to work with?
Namibia: Jackson Wahengo, Sally and Hishishi Papa
International: Sketchy Bongo, Pharell Williams and Kanye West
What are you listening to right now?
Anderson Paak – Malibu
What should we look forward to?
An original representation of myself; I’ll be putting out a different sound that will be a blend between the past, present and future.
Talk to us about FIKAMA…
Fikama is produced Dj KBoz and it features him as well. Fikama is a song for the free spirits, a song that makes you forget about your troubles and basically just a song that makes you dance. What is special about it is that it’s a blend between Hip Hop and Afro-House. It’s something that Dj KBoz and I both have never done before, but yet it’s so original.
Who was involved?
Dj KBoz is one of Namibia’s musical giants who has produced award winning hits and one of the hardest working artists I know.
Have you heard FIKAMA? Have you not?
